Stokes County Schools propose saving jobs with $1 million from fund balance

(By Meghann Evans, The Stokes News) - School officials have warned county government for a few years now that 2012-13 would be a cliff year, with the loss of federal stimulus funds and cuts in state funding leaving school systems scrambling for dollars.

This is evident in the proposed Stokes County Schools budget for 2012-13, which proposes to use around $1 million of the school system’s roughly $1.6 million undesignated fund balance to balance the budget instead of cutting staff.

“The primary goal in the development of the budget for 2012-13 was to save the jobs of our employees,” explained Superintendent Ronnie Mendenhall.
